Description

The Jyräänmäki water tower is ideally located at the strait between lakes Mallasselkä and Vanajavesi. It is excellent for example for monitoring the autumn migration of wildfowls, as many flocks come from the northeast, from Mallasselkä, flying right next by the tower. Also, when monitoring the autumn migration of Common cranes, its position is excellent, as from the tower you can see the crane route over Pälkäne in east, as well as the crane routes on the western side and over the Valkeakoski. However, during spring the crane migration goes mostly from the far west. The site is also excellent during spring and autumn geese migration, and moderate for monitoring the raptor migration. The tower is not the best for monitoring the passerines because of its altitude and partly because of the noise caused by city traffic.

Location

The water tower is prominent in the center of Valkeakoski, the address is Jyräänkatu 2, next to the tower is a car park. The facilities are excellent, i.e.there is also a rest room in the tower, and the adjacent Neste petrol station offers the opportunity to eat.

Access

Access is limited, as the tower is locked, but the keys can be asked from Olli Haukkovaara, mobile phone 040 502 5023 and e-mail ohaukkovaara@gmail.com. You may contact Olli also via WhatsApp and Telegram.
